A "healthy school meal environment" not only gives students opportunities to make healthy meal choices but also encourages them to do so. The extent to which a healthy school meal environment affects the success of USDA's school meals programs is currently a subject of debate. The policy strategies that can be used to encourage such an environment for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP)also are subjects of debate. Environmental factors considered to be important include: (1) the nutritional quality, variety, and acceptability of program meals; (2) meal scheduling; (3) nutrition education; and (4) sales of non-USDA ("competitive") foods. Other factors contributing to an overall healthy nutrition environment in... |

The paper extends the household hedonic model, as a non-market valuation tool, by estimating a supply function for variety attributes of a subsistence crop in a developing country. The model is applied to bananas in Uganda, making use of disaggregated data on variety-specific farm-gate banana bunch prices and attributes. The hedonic analysis is applied at the farm-gate, the first link in the market chain, while accounting for the semi-subsistence nature of banana producing households. Within the framework of the agricultural household, where consumption and production decisions are non-separable, prices reflect the implicit marginal valuation of both consumption and production attributes jointly. The paper is motivated by the need to quantify the value of... |

One of the characteristics of the kibbutz was that it belonged to a nation-wide movement, it was open to the outside world and was involved in all aspects of society. In view of the changes taking place in the kibbutzim and in their surroundings the kibbutz may forfeit its characteristics as an assertive and centralized, or at least federative, organization. In consequence the kibbutz may cease to be a social movement seeking to attain goals of universal value and turn into an organized self-interested pressure group. The dilemma faced by the kibbutz is whether it will be a system of egotistic people seeing themselves as shrewd-calculating-yuppies, or members of a social movement seeking to attain goals of universal value, considered by others as "freiers" |

Nominal grain and oilseed prices have declined dramatically from the high levels observed in the mid-1990s. As a result, it has been suggested by some industry stakeholders that measures should be taken to limit world crop supplies to raise prices. One such measure is a set-aside program involving a number of participants that would significantly reduce the quantity of land in production over a certain period of time. In fact, the European Union and the United States currently have set-aside programs that, together, already have had a positive effect on crop prices. Set-aside programs could also become relevant if the use of the World Trade Organization blue box is extended to more countries after the next round of negotiations. This analysis focuses on... |

This publication is a technical report describing the methodology Strategic Policy Branch used in its cumulative impact study (which was published in 1998). The purpose is to further document the methodology and adapt it to estimate coefficients which can be used to assist in the analysis of proposed fees. Its main audience is policy analysts within government. The report presents a description of the economic analysis of user fees, describes a mathematical model used to quantitatively assess the impact of a change in user fees, and presents sets of coefficients or multipliers which can be used to estimate the incidence of proposed fees. |

A deterministic model for the economic impact of African Horse Sickness (AHS) on the equine breeding industry was developed for South Africa. It was applied to the case of the 2007/2008 outbreak of AHS in the Eastern Cape as a pilot application of the model, using data from breeders in the province. It was concluded that the deterministic model’s extension to include other areas of equine livelihoods could be effective in exposing the need for further research into the control and treatment of AHS in South Africa. |

This report presents the preliminary results of a statistically valid 2006 survey of small agricultural producers (sales of less than $50,000) in three Western states (Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona). The West has undergone significant change, and the composition of farm managers has changed with it. This report provides information from farm operators in the rural West on their perceived threats as well as characteristics of themselves and their operations. Topics of interest were demographics, reasons for involvement in agriculture, income, resource management (crops and livestock), and preferences for information delivery. The project was supported by the Western Center for Risk Management Education. |

A broad screening programme, covering the most general phytochemical groups of compounds, was developed on the basis of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). A total of 46 TLC systems, comprising 26 derivatization reagents, 3 stationary phases, and 4 mobile phases, were included. The TLC systems were classified according to the groups of phytochemical compounds detected: Alcohols and phenolic compounds; Carbohydrates; N-containing compounds; Organic acids and lipids; P-containing compounds; S-containing compounds, and Terpenoids. Furthermore, one group of TLC systems detected compounds from several of the mentioned groups. The screening programme was applied in the screening of potatoes (S. tuberosum L.), peas (P. sativum L.), kale (B. oleracea L.), carrots... |
